Clearfield County to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks

Plans are in the works in Clearfield County to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Marven Smith of Clearfield told the Clearfield County commissioners that he and a group of volunteers are planning to hold several events during the weekend of Sept. 11, which could include a ceremony at the courthouse square, a parade through downtown, a program at the Clearfield Driving Park and a memorial stone placed in front of the courthouse on a pillar adjacent to the Ten Commandments.
Smith said their ideas for the design of the stone are to recognize all three sites, the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the Shanksville crash site, as well as those who lost their lives.
Smith said they also plan to decorate the downtown in red, white and blue and said they have asked area students to make posters commemorating Sept. 11, which will be placed in downtown storefronts.
"We will bring the town alive for those two days for sure," Smith said.
Smith said they are still in the early planning stages of the event so he couldn't give many details or definite plans and said everything is still tentative. However, he said they are meeting on Feb. 22, and more details should be forthcoming afterward.

UK firefighters to run in New York for 9-11

The crew from Green Watch will head out to New York this September to do the 'Tunnel to Towers' run, a 5km route run by an off-duty fireman who died on 9/11.

The five Surrey firefighters each have to raise £1,500 for the Fire Fighters' Charity to take part in the run, a tribute to all those firemen and emergency services heroes who perished on that fateful day a decade ago.

Green watch firefighter, Karl Jones, explained: "The run is in memory of Stephen Siller, a Brooklyn firefighter who on hearing that the twin towers had been hit, raced on foot to the site with his gear strapped to his back.

"The Fire Fighters' Charity put out flyers to all the stations in the country about the run, and with it being the tenth anniversary of September 9/11 we wanted to go out there and show our support and raise some money for charity in the process. But it will be great to run alongside all our brothers and sisters from the emergency services."

Mr Jones will do the run with his watch manager Tony Bryant, and the other Green Watch members, Mark Fawkes, George Rudd and Tom Singleton. But in a twist to a normal 'fun run' the firefighters will add to the re-enactment of the day by under-taking the route in their fire-fighting gear - making the run considerable more demanding.

Mr Jones added: "Most of us do try and keep quite fit, personally I try and run a bit every day, and sometimes as a watch we get to do some fitness as physical training sessions."

The group have secured spare kit from the official kit supplier to Surrey Fire and Rescue, but Mr Jones says they are not phased by the prospect of running through New York's CBD in heavy gear.

If Green Watch are all successful in their money-raising ventures, they will fly out on September 22, and will take part in the actual run on September 25.

Mr Jones added: "We really need help from local people and businesses to reach our targets, and if we make over that £1,500 target each, then we will be giving the extra to a local childrens' charity."

New York firefighter Stephen Siller had tried to get to the World Trade Centre by truck, but was prohibited from entering the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, so got out and ran the remainder of the route on foot.

Mariposa County Fire Department awarded Artifacts to be part of 9/11 memorial

Last spring, Mariposa County Fire Chief Jim Wilson said he learned of the availability of artifacts recovered from the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Selected pieces were designated to public safety agencies throughout the country for use in local memorials.

After a lengthy application process and project evaluation, the Mariposa County Fire Department was awarded four artifacts by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Representatives of law enforcement, fire serv-ice, military and civilians met for an inaugural 9/11 Memorial Committee meeting on Jan. 21.

With the 10th anniversary later this year, the group set a goal of dedicating the Mariposa County Memorial on Sept. 11, 2011.

Plans for 9/11 Memorial Tour Buses

In less than seven months, millions of visitors will begin flocking to the National Sept. 11 Memorial at the World Trade Center site—many of them traveling by tour bus.

City officials and Memorial staff are hoping that a timed reservation system, similar to the one used for the Statue of Liberty, will help lend some order to the deluge of visitors to the site. Joe Daniels, president and CEO of the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum, announced that passes to the plaza would only be available through advance purchase from the memorial or throuThe committee also learned that there would be no charge for admission onto the Memorial’s plaza, and that victim’s family members would get first priority for reservations. Special consideration will likely also be given to Lower Manhattan residents, members of the military and first responders, but Daniels said that process has yet to be finalized.

Workers begin installing bronze panels on 9/11 memorial

Finally, the World Trade Center is beginning to bear the names of those who died there.

These exclusive photographs obtained by the Daily News show workers installing the first of 152 bronze panels at the 9/11 memorial where the twin towers once stood.

By the time the memorial opens this fall - on the 10th anniversary of the attacks - almost 3,000 names will be emblazoned there in a permanent tribute to their memories

Beavercreek to build 9-11 memorial

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (WDTN) - The City of Beavercreek moved closer to building a 9-11 memorial.

Monday night, the city council approved the location along North Fairfield Road between Dayton Xenia and US 35.

The Beavercreek enrichment association also donated $5,000 for the project.

City leaders said they will now begin their own fundraising drive.

9-11 Memorial Committee Member, Rafael Marderosian said, "This is something that really comes from the heart and I would ask that everyone, we don't' care what the amount is, make a donation. It will make you feel good."

The site will contain an actual steel beam from The World Trade Center.

World Trade Center Steel To Form Purcellville Memorial

Last week, the Town of Purcellville finally got word its request for a piece of steel from the World Trade Center destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attack had been approved.

Yesterday, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which was responsible for storing all the debris collected from the collapse of the World Trade Center Twin Towers, shipped a portion of an I-beam from the structure to the town.
The first phase of the parking is scheduled for completion in July, so "our goal is to have it all done in that timeframe and formally dedicated Sunday, Sept. 11," Lazaro said.

The town plans a 7 p.m. dedication ceremony to honor the memory of those who lost their lives 9/11 as well as honoring all those in Purcellville's fire and rescue companies, the police department and members of the faith community.

"We have a ton of volunteer and career people here. We want to make it something special," Lazaro said, noting that numerous town first responders are slated to receive awards during the upcoming Valor Awards program.
