Plans are in the works in Clearfield County to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Marven Smith of Clearfield told the Clearfield County commissioners that he and a group of volunteers are planning to hold several events during the weekend of Sept. 11, which could include a ceremony at the courthouse square, a parade through downtown, a program at the Clearfield Driving Park and a memorial stone placed in front of the courthouse on a pillar adjacent to the Ten Commandments.
Smith said their ideas for the design of the stone are to recognize all three sites, the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the Shanksville crash site, as well as those who lost their lives.

9/11 steel makes its way to Charlottesville
The steel support beam will provide the focus for a memorial to emergency personnel planned for the city’s soon-to-be built fire station on Fontaine Avenue near Jefferson Park Avenue. The station will replace the temporary structure the department uses at Ivy Road and U.S. 29.

9/11 families: Bring World Trade Center sphere back to its home
A contingent of 9/11 families wants “The Sphere” returned to its ancestral home at Ground Zero, a plan they say the Port Authority opposes. What’s more, concerns are growing because the sculpture, now situated in Battery Park, will have to be moved this summer because of restoration work on the lawn. Some fear that “The Sphere” could be placed in storage on the eve of the 10th anniversary.

9/11 Museum Taking Shape Months Before Anniversary
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Executives overseeing the 9/11 Memorial say the museum is taking shape months before the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward calls the memorial the sacred heart of the new World Trade Center where 1,200 tons of structural steel have already been put in place ahead of schedule for a massive glass and steel pavilion.
In the atrium, two 70-foot tridents from the old towers will identify the gateway to the museum.
“They’re two large twin tridents from the original World Trade Center that we’ve already placed inside that structure,” Ward said. “It’ll be a beautiful glass building where you’ll come in, you’ll walk down an entrance ramp and that will be where you descend down into all of the museum space.”
Ward said the pavilion will be clad by the 10th anniversary and Memorial President Joe Daniel said he’s pleased with the progress.
“Steel for the beautiful entrance down into the museum is already up,” Ward said. “We didn’t even think we’d have that steel by this date.”
Mariposa committee to design 9/11 memorial for tenth anniversary of WTC attacks
Last spring Mariposa County Fire Chief Jim Wilson said he learned of the availability of artifacts recovered from the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks on America.
Selected pieces were designated to public safety agencies throughout the country for use in local memorials. After a lengthy application process and project evaluation, the Maricopa County Fire Department was awarded four artifacts by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Representatives of law enforcement, fire service, military and civilians met for an inaugural 9/11 Memorial Committee meeting on Jan. 21.
Participating in the kick-off meeting were Sheriff Doug Binnewies, Tom Williams of the Mariposa VFW Post, Scott Cummings from the American Legion, Lt. Karen Wilson, Captain Dan Smith, Volunteer Coordinator Hallie Wass, Wilson from County Fire and Donna Brownell and Lorie Setterberg representing civilians and the Mariposa County Arts Council. The Arts Council will design the memorial.
With the tenth anniversary later this year, the group set a goal of dedicating the Mariposa County Memorial on Sunday Sept. 11, 2011. The artifacts, four nearly identical sections of I-beams, were shipped from a JFK Airport hangar last week. No taxpayer funding will be used so a fundraising effort will launched soon, Wilson said in a news release.
The committee members said they believe the Mariposa 9/11 Memorial will evolve into a monument of regional interest attracting visitors from all over California and beyond. Wilson and other committee members said they encourage people and community service groups to get involved through financial support.

The FDNY Retirees of California are actively seeking sponsors and co-hosts for next year’s 10-year anniversary 9/11 Memorial on the USS Midway.
Dear Prospective Donor,
The FDNY Retirees of California would like to make the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks a memorable one, but cannot do it without your help.
Along with the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, we are planning on a grand event to commemorate this imporant date in history.
We are looking for corporate sponsorship to assist us in financing the dinner reception following the memorial event. In the past several years, along with modest donations in time, food, and funding we have been able to hold this reception at no cost to attendees. This year, however, we are anticipating much higher attendance due to the fact it is the 10th anniversary.
The event will take place on Sunday, September 11, 20100 on the flight deck of the historic USS Midway, which is permanently docked at the Navy Pier on gorgeous San Diego Bay (910 North Harbor Dr).
The event will consist of:
- Presentation of the Colors by Honor Guards from San Diego County FD’s, Orange County Fire Authority, the US Marine Cops, and the US Border Patrol.

At this time the location is still being negotiated but it will either be on the USS Midway itself or at the San Diego Firehouse Museum, located in Little Italy at 1572 Columbia St, (at the intersection of Columia and Cedar Streets.
